How to Use a 430EX
- 1). With the flash turned off, slide the flash onto the camera's hot shoe and tighten the locking ring until it is in place.
- 2). Turn your camera and flash on. If you look through your camera's viewfinder, you should see a little green lightning bolt in your viewfinder indicating that you have an external flash attached and the camera is syncing with it.
- 3). Press the large semi-circle button on the flash until the you see E-TTL setting in the LCD screen. E-TTL stands for "Evaluative -- Through The Lens" which is Canon's exposure system designed to work in conjunction with Canon EOS digital SLR cameras.
- 4). Set the camera to any exposure mode other than "M," which is the manual setting, and the flash and camera will work together to achieve the correct exposure.
- 5). Tilt the flash head towards the ceiling; this is called bouncing light and it produces a softer light on your subject. If you are shooting in a vertical position and still want to bounce the light off of the ceiling, you can swivel the flash head by pressing the release button on the side of the flash head. This will allow you to direct the light directly up towards the ceiling when you are using your camera to take a portrait image or vertical picture.
- 6). Compose and take your picture. Wait for the red "Ready" light to come back on, and you are ready to take another picture.
