- Some bleeding after IUD removal is completely normal, as is a moderate amount of pain. Taking ibuprofen prior to your IUD removal appointment can help prevent or lessen the discomfort.
- To lessen the amount of post-removal bleeding, schedule your removal during a week in which you do not expect to have your period.
- Once your IUD is removed, expect light bleeding or spotting for up to a week afterward.
- Heavy bleeding is not normal following IUD removal, and may indicate that your uterus was punctured. Contact your healthcare provider right away or visit your local emergency room if you experience heavy bleeding.
- Many IUD users experience a cessation of their periods while using an IUD. Once an IUD is removed, normal bleeding patterns should return within the following three months.
