The "Best Kept Secret" Baby Clothes Line

The purpose of the "Best Kept Secret" category in this years' awards was a simple one: to help readers learn about emerging baby clothes brands. During the nomination period, this was the most active category with an extensive list of nominees. Unfortunately, only five could be the finalists; however, all of those nominations did give me plenty of new brands to write about in the coming months. Read on to learn more about these five brands.

1. Peek ... Aren’t You Curious?

We all hope for super laid back babies that smile 24/7 and sleep through the night, right from the start. While this rarely happens, at least your little hipster can dress the part of the uber-calm kid. Peek ... Aren’t You Curious is a great line of baby clothes that will inspire you to kick back as well and take life a little slower too.

The Boehemian-Surfer-Indian mesh of styles features everything from sundresses to skinny jeans (and even sparkly shoes), and a fantastic selection of slogan tees (my personal fave is “Respect Your Mother”). In 2010, Peek ... Aren’t You Curious teamed up with Nordstrom and is now carried online and exclusively at Nordstrom’s department stores.

2. ZooKies

If you are even thinking of cloth diapering, this site is a must. The impeccable sewing technique and artistic pairing of fabrics and patterns is enough to make a convert out of the staunchest of disposable-diapering parents.

Still on the fence? ZooKies offers a “Try It Cloth Diapering Kit.” Besides the plethora of diaper cover choices, you will also find baby leg warmers (to match the diapers covers, of course), paci clips, cloth wipes, new baby gift sets, an adorable fabric memory game, reusable snack bags, bibs, burp clothes, and a great selection of blankets. Perhaps the best part of ZooKies is the sheer selection of fabric available. SAHM and owner, Michele Zook, has found amazing prints featuring bold, playful colors that will make you smile.

3. Katy and Zucchini

For a truly unique collection of “Nerd Herd” wear, head to Katy and Zucchini. You will find a great collection of baby bodysuits, tees, and hats featuring playfully obscure prints of “geekery” such as: bacteriophage, pocket protector, nerdy alphabet, and baby doctor. Created by a mom and science teacher, Melissa Jenkins admits she's nerd at heart and a total goofball.

And if you're environmentally-friendly, you'll love the green method of screen printing she developed and uses for Katy and Zucchini, almost as much the adorable line she has created for your little budding Einstein.

4. L’oved Baby

Featuring 100% cotton separates in soft colors, L’oved Baby has created a stylish and relaxed line of super-silky baby clothes you and your babe will love. Worn by numerous celeb’s babies (including Celine Dion, Halle Berry, Brooke Shields, and Hilary Duff, amongst others), L’oved Baby also specializes in award winning nursing shawls of all colors. Started by Mom, Sharon Oved, over 10 years ago, L’oved Baby has grown and received rave reviews in Pregnancy & Newborn, American Baby, and Baby Couture Magazines.

5. City Threads

Whether you are looking for peace, love, construction, or rock n’ roll, City Threads has got you covered. With unique, retro graphics and a wide selection of styles, sizes, and colors, it is easy to see why City Threads was voted “Best Boys Clothing Line” in the Red Tricycle Totally Awesome Awards, and featured in People and US Weekly magazines. How can you go wrong with a superhero lightning lounge set (also comes in swim trunks)? Have a girl? City Threads has a great selection of big/little sister and graphic tees for your little lady. Although the tees are the most abundant item, City Threads offers hats, swim wear, pants, shorts, and underwear/panties.
