- The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has identified asbestos as a carcinogen. In addition to causing cancer, prolonged exposure to asbestos can lead to serious lung and respiratory problems.
- When removing tiles with asbestos, the primary risk comes from the dust created during the process. Tiles that are removed intact present less of a risk than do those that are crumbling, however some dust is bound to be created in any removal project. Once asbestos dust is airborne, it will settle on surfaces in the work area.
- You should always wear a respiratory mask during an asbestos tile removal project. Plastic sheeting can cover doorways and windows, and a pair of disposable coveralls will protect the skin. Always wipe down a work area thoroughly with soap and water after removing tiles and dispose of asbestos material in landfills that specifically accept hazardous waste.
