Installation of a Floor

    • 1). Spread your plastic underlayment along the edge of the room where you're going to start the flooring courses. Cut to fit with a utility knife. Leave a few inches of plastic around the edges so it goes up the wall a little.

    • 2). Connect two floorboards to each other, snapping the ends together. Set them on the floor next to the wall at one end of the room. Put spacers between the wall and the boards so they sit slightly out from the wall.

    • 3). Set the remaining boards of the first course along the wall, connecting them all together at the ends.

    • 4). Cut the final board in the course on a miter saw so it fits against the side wall.

    • 5). Set each of the next courses of boards by connecting them at the sides of the course before it. Arrange the boards so the ends stagger from course to course. Use a miter saw to cut the last board of each course.

    • 6). Work across the floor course by course. Roll out more underlayment as needed.

Length-cut the boards of the last row so they fit along the ending wall with a 3/8-inch gap there.

    • 7). Measure and cut floor trim to go around the perimeter of the floor, installing it with your trim nailer. The trim should cover the spaces.
