Keyword Density Tips

Once upon a time, keyword density was all that was required for the possibility of high ranking in the popular search engines like Yahoo, Altavista and early Google. A certain percentage of relevant keywords scattered throughout your content and your search engine optimizing (SEO) work was practically done. My, how times have changed. Now it takes a lot more than a few keywords floating around to have any significant standing. Yes, you still want to be sure that you have relevant keywords in your content, title and meta-description because these elements are still evaluated. But be sure not to get too caught up in just these facets as there are other factors that prove to be even more relevant in terms of successful SEO.

You must learn to look past the mere implementation of keywords on-site and consider the importance of off-site backlinks.  Backlinks are incoming links to your website or a web page on your site from an outside source. These inbound links are extremely important for web navigation and hold great significance with SEO. Major search engines (especially Google) use backlinks to determine the rank of a web page in search results. A significant number of backlinks is an indication to Google that your page is of great importance and that people are finding the content on your page to be relevant and useful.

Google interprets a link from an off-site page to your page as a vote by the off-site page for your page. Websites that utilize a successful SEO marketing strategy increases the number of backlinks to a page. Not all backlinks are created equal. There are values placed on backlinks. Backlinks from sites that are more notable or sought after on any given topic tend to be seen by the search engines as being more valuable. If there are keywords linked between then content of both sites through relevant backlinks this has great influence on a page's search engine ranking.

Anchor text is also very important. Anchor text is what is known as the descriptive labeling of a hyperlink as it appears on a webpage. The words in the anchor text are very important as they can also determine the ranking that your web page will receive by the major search engines. If a user enters a keyword query that is relevant to an anchor text and attached webpage content this is weighed heavily in ranking on a search engine results page.

Though backlinks are now more important for SEO than simply flowering your content with keywords, you must be very careful not to overdo it. Building too many backlinks in a short period of time sends a red flag to Google that there is spamming taking place. The slightest inclination that your site and your backlinks are spam raises caution to Google. This lessens the likelihood of having your site placed high on search engine results and in some instances causes your site to be removed from Google's index altogether.
