What pH Does a Dogwood Tree Need?

    Time Frame: When To Plant

    • Dogwood trees can be planted at any time of year. However, avoid planting them when the soil is extremely hot and dry or if it is so cold that the soil is frozen.

    Location

    • Dogwood trees need filtered light. They can also be planted in an area where they will receive alternating periods of direct sun and shade throughout the day.

    Soil Conditions

    • Dogwood trees grow best in soil that is slightly moist but well drained and not damp. The soil pH should be approximately 5.5. Dogwood trees prefer areas with slightly acidic soil.

    Size

    • When planting a dogwood, you will need to excavate an area of soil that is at least five times the diameter of the root ball. Therefore, test the soil pH over a wide area to ensure that it is sufficiently acidic (5.5 pH).

    Watering

    • Dogwood trees have relatively shallow roots and are susceptible to drying out if too much time passes between rains. Ideally, they should be watered once or twice weekly.
