Ways to develop a professional writing style

Writing style is the foundation of all your writing, factual or non-factual, all the words you use are expressed through your writing style.

Developing this style is a key factor in your progression as a writer. Top writers have already perfected and fine-tuned their styles to appeal to their target audience perfectly. Remember your audience is the target, your writing style should come naturally, but should also target an audience as well. This brings me to my first point.

• Write naturally - Using words you wouldn't normally to impress, or create an effect may be good in some circumstances, however in others it can make your writing sound wrong and impede 'flow'. Using words you would naturally will help you to create the foundation of your writing style to build on. This will let you know what type of writer you are in the first place, then allow you to build on what you have.

• Read books you enjoy - Reading books you enjoy will tend to have the same writing style as you enjoy using yourself. For example, if you enjoy fiction books, the chances are you will like writing in the style used in fiction books. This will allow you to investigate the styles used in this type of book, without even knowing it. The more books of a certain type you read, the more you will start employing the techniques used without even realising.

• Write - Practice makes perfect, the more you write and the more feedback you receive from your target audience, the better writer you will become. Although, you should never worry about appealing to your target audience, write for yourself and you should automatically appeal to a group of like-minded people. The more you enjoy your own book, the more it will be enjoyed.

• Thoroughly Proofread - Nothing screams unprofessional like errors in text, a couple of small errors can make the difference between a masterpiece and a laughing stock. Errors stop the readers 'flow' and take them out of the atmosphere you are writing to keep them in. If you are serious about writing, consider online proofreading services to proofread your writing for you.

• Have plenty of rest - There is nothing worse than a book with a bad ending. Do not force yourself to write when you do not feel like writing, doing so will just reduce the quality which will need re-doing anyway. It is best to sleep after writing a part, then come back with fresh eyes to read it back over to ensure you have achieved your goal.

Follow these points and you should be well on your way to writing better and building on your writing style. There are many ways of developing your writing style, and many benefits in doing so. Here are a few steps that explain why it is important to develop your writing style, and how to change yours.
