- 1). Find a free Internet connection speed checker, sometimes called a "speedometer," online. Examples of these websites include McAfee's Internet Connection Speedometer, Bandwidth Place's Internet Speed Test and Windows User Group Network's Bandwidth Speed Test (see References).
- 2). Click the website's start button. Each website names this button something different, but it will indicate that pushing the button will begin the test.
- 3). Wait for the tool to test your connection; this generally takes no more than a minute or two depending on your connection. First the tool will test your downloading speed and then it will test your uploading speed.
