How to Dress Up Bathroom Cabinets

    • 1). Replace old hardware such as hinges, knobs and handles. Purchase similar-size hardware from a home improvement store. Consider using a different sheen or style, but make sure the hardware for the cabinets matches the finish of the faucets.

    • 2). Give the cabinets a splash of color. Paint the outside or inside frame area of the cabinet doors and drawers with a different color. For example, a child’s bathroom could have white frames with red on the inside.

    • 3). Refinish the cabinets to give the bathroom a new look. Remove doors and drawers as well as their hardware. Sand the surface using 80-grit sandpaper to remove any glossy coating and apply a thin coat of acrylic-based primer. Allow the primer to dry overnight before applying a top coat of the desired color. Use a semi-gloss latex-based paint to prevent bubbling or mildew growth due to the high moisture content in bathrooms.

    • 4). Antique or weather the appearance of the cabinets. Antiquing is characterized by a crackled appearance in the paint. Use an antiquing kit that includes a base coat, crackling glaze and top coat to give the bathroom cabinets a weathered look. Apply the base coat and allow it to dry overnight. Apply the crackling glaze using a paintbrush or roller and let it stand for one to four hours, depending on the manufacturer. Paint the cabinets with the top coat, and the crackling glaze will begin to crack and show the base coat color through for a natural, distressed look.
