How to Paint Car Bumper Lights
- 1). Remove your bumper headlights. The process of doing this varies by car make and model, so do consult your car's manufacturer's handbook to make sure that you remove them properly.
- 2). Clean the lens with soap and water. While holding the lens in the bucket of soap and water, lightly sand the inside of the lens. This is the side that will be painted. Sanding it will allow the paint to adhere better, and using wet sandpaper will minimize dust. Rinse the lens and allow time to air-dry. Do not cloth-dry, as this can cause lint and threads to stick to the lens and become visible when painted.
- 3). Paint the inside of the lens in the color of your choice. Paint for your bumper lights is a specific type of paint that will dry translucent, so that the light can still shine through. It comes in a spray can for easy application. Spray a thin coat in short, even bursts over the lens. Wait approximately 30 minutes in-between coats and paint 5 to 6 coats total. Allow to cure for 24 hours.
- 4). Sand the paint down after it has dried, to remove any bumps or drips that may have occurred. Wipe the sand dust off with a lint-free cloth.
- 5). Spray on 3 to 4 coats of enamel clear coat paint. This will protect your paint color and protect the paint from melting from heat from the light itself. Allow the clear coat to cure for 24 hours.
- 6). Replace the bumper lights onto your car in reverse order of the removal process, according to your car's manufacturer's directions.
