Hypoglycemia: The Types, Causes And The Treatment

Hypoglycemia is a very frustrating condition to say the very least. If you suffer from it, well then I am sure you know just what I mean. I have been dealing with the condition for literally my whole life off and on. However it wasn't until just recently that I really learned how to control it and all out beat it! Was it easy? No not at first, but now I live a totally normal and active life free from the all of the symptoms of this very frustrating disorder.

So What is Hypoglycemia?
Well the condition is basically low blood sugar levels brought about by either going without eating (this type is known as fasting) or brought about by eating foods that spike blood sugar levels thus spiking insulin levels and the insulin eventually brings blood sugar to very low levels (this is type known as reactive).

Which ever type of this condition you may have, the end result is the same. You can have symptoms that include severe fatigue, tremors, nervousness, anxiety, panic attacks, heart racing and the list goes on.

At my very worst, I'd experience heart palpitations, tremors, confusion, anxiety and more. I ended up in the emergency room several times. It was not pleasant!

What are the Symptoms of Hypoglycemia?
Well, the biggest symptom of this disorder is probably fatigue. Other symptoms include confusion, anxiety, heart arrhythmia's, weakness, irritability and the list goes on and on unfortunately.

So How do You Beat Hypoglycemia?
Well, this is the million dollar question! The general rule however though is to eat foods that will not spike your blood sugar levels and then cause your insulin levels to spike also. For example, simple carbs like mashed potatoes, pasta, white breads, cake, candy, soft drinks instantly spike your blood sugar and thus demand that your body produce more insulin. Foods you want to eat are ones that will not spike your insulin levels. These foods are ones that are low on the glycemic index. Foods like steak, chicken, fish, brown rice, oatmeal, blueberries, spinach, cheese, vegetables and the list goes on.

Now remember, if you have any medical conditions or are on any medication - well give me some! Just kidding, what I meant to say is if you are on any medication or under the care of your doctor, please consult with he or she before beginning any new type of diet or exercise program.
