Why Are So Many Users Not Aware Of Free Firewall Protection?

Let me start off with a true story about fire wall protection...
Over my 20 year career as a computer tech, I've covered all angles of it.
Less then a year ago, I was installing a wireless network in a home.
In one room I see a peeled coffee can on top of a computer with a wire soldered to the side.
I looked at it and pondered.
Just then the owner walks in and smiles.
"That's so I can pick the signal up from the router across the street.
" Not only was he getting free internet because his neighbors neglected to turn on there free firewall protection, if he wanted to, he could intercept any and all transactions made online.
It is estimated that one third of all wireless networks are not secured.
They don't use encryption or utilize the free firewall protection available to them.
"Hotspots" become more and more popular every month.
Be it in businesses, hospitals, in homes, airports and now even parks.
Yet this only makes it easier for electronic pickpockets to eavesdrop on you from miles away.
This means that with the free 'tools of the trade' - an intruder can sit across the street from your home or business and disrupt services, launch viruses and prevent authorized access to the network.
I all ready discussed tapping into your internet connection which in turn means lower bandwidth resulting in slower connections.
The problem is that even those that use the free firewall protection available to them, they do not understand it.
Back to my personal experiences a moment...
I am also the guy people call when they can't get on the internet.
More times then not, it is because there firewall protection is not set up right.
They do a real good job of locking the world out of there computer, but they turned on there Windows firewall, Fire up there ZoneAlarm, and top it with there anti-virus firewall.
All running into each other.
All that is for another article, but the point is that it is critical that everyone that uses a computer should understand firewall protection.
Setting up a routers firewall with a good software can make anyone bulletproof.
