How to Make Smoke Come From a Homemade Volcano

    • 1). Set up your homemade volcano on a hard, flat surface such as concrete. Place a layer of clay at the bottom of the central vent of the volcano, where you would normally mix the baking soda and vinegar. This will create a seal to prevent any of the dry ice gas from leaking through the bottom and out the sides of the volcano. Place a cylindrical container that can hold half a liter of water on top of it and seal the rim of the container with clay.

    • 2). Boil half a liter of hot water in a pot, removing it from heat as soon as it begins to bubble so you do not lose any water due to evaporation. Pour the water in a pitcher and seal it with plastic so less heat can escape. Take the pitcher directly to the volcano outside and pour the water into the cylindrical container.

    • 3). Remove three pieces of dry ice from the container you have been holding them in using the insulated gloves. If you want a larger effect, you can drop in a few more cubes, but five is near the limit for the amount of water you are using. Drop all the cubes of dry ice into the hot water and step back. Reacting to the water, the dry ice, which is simply the frozen form of carbon dioxide, will start to sublimate, turning from a solid directly into a gas. Smoke-like vapor should begin to pour down from all sides of the volcano for several minutes.
