The Pros and Cons of Cream for Hemorrhoids

There are ailments that are very much prevalent yet may be too embarrassing to warrant a medical consultation such that its true frequency cannot be accurately estimated.
This is true for hemorrhoids.
So sufferers the world over prefer buying a cream for hemorrhoids and treating their understandably quite humiliating condition discreetly.
Cream is the usual first-line medication for piles because of its many advantages.
Firstly, and obviously, it addresses the common symptoms of piles such as itching and/or pain.
It is also easy to get since many preparations do not necessitate prescription.
It s accessibility is further upheld by its relatively low-cost.
More importantly for some, it enables the persons with piles to ease the irritations and, at the same time, do it in the lie-low.
This is aside from their ability to provide fast relief of the aforementioned symptoms.
The fast relief is basically due to the direct administration of the cream to the site of the piles.
The cream's active ingredients can then act straight to the root of the problem, or the symptom at least, so to speak.
But this is somehow the same source of the cream's cons.
For one, it is just a symptomatic treatment since creams do not get rid of or, more appropriately, reduce the size of the enlarged hemorrhoids.
According to the ingredients, adverse side effects may arise especially when instructions are not followed properly.
Common ingredients include hydrocortisone, pramoxine hydrochloride, and phenylephrine HCL and herbal extracts like shark liver oil, witch hazel and aloe vera gel.
Because of these ingredients too, especially the synthetic chemicals, creams are not indicated for prolapsed internal hemorrhoids.
The surface of internal hemorrhoids is still mucosa that will absorb the cream's components more readily.
This is a risk for easier precipitation of serious side effects.
Also while other creams claim to have protective features against worsening hemorrhoids, low term use of creams can actually aggravate the condition.
Some types of cream have components that in the long run result to the thinning of the anal tissues, thus, ironically, may even increase the susceptibility to piles.
Creams with natural ingredients such as the aforesaid aloe vera and witch hazel may be alternative options to the synthetic products.
They potentially have lesser side effects and claim to have added benefits.
These include strengthening the surrounding structures such that they not only relieve the symptoms of hemorrhoids but may also prevent recurrence or progression.
So despite the availability of over-the-counter cream for hemorrhoids, a visit to the physician prior to using it is still better.
Just makes sure that all your possible treatment options are laid out to you so you do not get ripped off by unnecessary procedures.
As with any other treatment modalities, creams for hemorrhoids are only as good as its proper use.
