Repairing a Surface on a Leather Jacket
- 1). Moisten a soft cloth with warm water and mild detergent. Rub the damaged area of the leather coat to clean the surface. Wipe the area with a cloth soaked with water to remove the soap. Dry the area with a clean cloth.
- 2). Cut excess fray and threads with a utility knife or a pair of sharp scissors. Cut uneven edges of a tear so the tear is smooth.
- 3). Cut the supplied cloth ¼ inch wider and longer than the tear in the jacket. Push the cut cloth against the back of the damaged area.
- 4). Mix the supplied colored compounds in a plastic cup to match the color of the jacket. Use a plastic spoon to stir the compounds. There is often a color chart included with the kit to help you match the color of your jacket.
- 5). Apply the compound to the damaged area with the supplied rubber spatula. Spread the compound enough to leave only a thin film on the surface of the jacket.
- 6). Apply the supplied grain paper, right side up, to the top of the compound. Once it is in place, do not move the grain paper.
- 7). Heat the metal end of a wooden dowel with a metal tip on a stove top until the metal glows red.
- 8). Touch the metal to the grain paper and roll it around for two to three minutes. Don’t touch the jacket with the heated metal, only the grain paper.
- 9). Cool the grain paper until it is safe to handle, at least 15 minutes.

Peel the grain paper from the coat.
