How to Convert MP4 to AVI With Open Source Software
- 1). Download TMPGEnc. TMPGEnc is an open source video converting program that is widely used around the Internet community. It specializes in taking video files and converting them to over a dozen different formats, including AVI. You can download the TMPGEnc installation file at tmpgenc.net.
- 2). Install TMPGEnc. To do this, simply click on the installation file that you downloaded and follow the instructions laid out on-screen.
- 3). Open TMPGEnc. You can either click on the icon that was placed on your computer's desktop during installation or select it from the "Programs" folder under the "Start" menu.
- 4). Select the "Add" option from the "File" menu. This will open up a window asking you to search for the file you want to convert. Locate your MP4 file on your computer's hard drive, click on it and press the "Add" button once again.
- 5). Change the settings of the "Output File" box located in the main TMPGEnc window from whatever it currently says to ".AVI."
- 6). Locate and press the "Start" button inside TMPGEnc. This will begin converting the file from the MP4 format to the AVI format. When the process is done (which can be quick or can take awhile, depending on both the size of the file and the speed of your computer), a dialog box stating so will be displayed and the program will make a dinging noise.
