How to Get Credit Card Companies to Lower Your Interest Rates

    • 1). Gather credit card offers you've received in the mail and elsewhere. Go online and look at other banks' websites and see if you pre-qualify for any offers that are at a lower rate than what you have.

    • 2). Call the customer service number of the credit card company for which you want a lower rate on your card. This number is available on the back of your credit card as well as on the company website.

    • 3). Speak to a customer service representative and tell them you would like to request a lower rate. Keep it simple and tell the representative about some of the offers you received. If the person seems unwilling, tell him or her that you are going to cancel your card and transfer your balance to another credit card company. Ask what the company can do to help you out to open up negotiations.

    • 4). Ask to speak to a supervisor if the customer service representative is not helping you out. There's no guarantee, but it's likely a supervisor will be able to give you results.

    • 5). Try calling again later if you don't have luck this time. You may be able to speak to a different customer service representative who is more willing to work with you.
