Ideas for Making Over a Bathroom on a Budget

    Change the Textiles

    • Sometimes, all you need to do to completely overhaul the look of the bathroom is get new towels and curtains. If your bath towels and washcloths have seen better days, are faded or torn, invest in several new sets. Even if you can't afford to trade in all your towels, getting at least one new set per occupant improves the look of the bathroom. When getting new towels, complete the makeover by replacing the shower curtain and bath mats as well.

    Spruce Up the Walls

    • A coat of paint on the walls adds a brand-new look to your bathroom. Choose a color that matches your taste and coordinates with the textiles in the room. If you like bright colors, a blue or yellow may work well. If you are going for a more low-key, sophisticated look, choose a khaki or gray shade for the wall and use textiles and other accents to add color.

    Add Adornments

    • Dress up the mirror over the sink by stenciling a floral border on it, using enamel paint. If you want to try something more advanced but still budget-friendly, try etching a design around the edge of the mirror. Accessorize by placing a decorative tray on the toilet tank and setting a scented candle on top. If you have room, add a bit of green to the bathroom by putting a small houseplant on a wall shelf or window ledge. Choose a plant that thrives in humidity.

    New Faucets and Knobs

    • If getting a new sink or shower isn't in the budget this time around, improve their look by installing new faucets and shower heads. Make your makeover environmentally friendly by putting in low-flow faucets. Another way to improve the appearance of the fixtures is to put new door pulls and handles on the sink cabinet doors and drawers and to replace the flusher on the toilet tank. If the toilet seat and lid are cracked or dingy looking, install a new set.
