Earth-Friendly Food, Charming Locations in Rio de Janeiro
Via Sete has carved a niche in Rio de Janeiro dining with an earth-friendly menu and pleasant, sustainable décor.
With three locations, the restaurant features some of Rio's best wraps, juicy organic beef and veggie burgers, and some outstanding desserts.
Owners Ricardo Stern and Feliz Optix promote sustainable practices such as the recycling of cooking oil, paper and plastic bottles. Via Sete has been a WWF partner since 2007.
The crisp shrimp with coconut and the fish falafel are some of Via Sete's famous appetizers. Folow up with organic salads, grilled meats - perhaps the lamb burger with chimichurri - matched with a side and a sauce in one of the combinados (combos).
Wraps at Via Sete are fine and plump. Ingredients in the filling are grilled, and not fried.
For dessert, one of the highlights is an award-winning brownie. The flambéed bananas and frozen desserts made from 100% fruit are other good choices.
The restaurant started out in Central Rio. It soon stood out among the area's reasonably priced eateries. Among the faves in this spot surrounded by offices and historical attractions are the salad menu and the individual feijoada served on Fridays, with rice, farofa, shredded kale, orange and a lime cocktail.
The next branch to be opened was Ipanema, with a coveted patio dining area where people sip on lychee caipirinhas or the mango and passion fruit frozen and indulge in nice appetizers such as grilled mushrooms seasoned with fresh herbs and linguiça combos.
The newest branch, opened in 2011, is in Leblon. A hip hangout which turns into a bar after 11 p.m., it has its highlights in finger foods such as the veal croquettes with dried mushrooms and leeks, served with paprika and thyme sauce.
Some of the best drinks served are the melon martinis and Italian soda mixes in the flavors red berries, Sicilian lemon and green apple, as well as the Tantra, a pitcher drink which blends cachaça, sugarcane juice, Sicilian lemon juice and ginger.
