Vinyl Rip Repair

    Waterbed or Air Mattress

    • 1). Fill the air mattress if it is not filled already, and do not drain the waterbed. Find the rip if you do not see it by pushing down on the mattress and feeling along the surface with your hand until you find the spot where the air or water is escaping through the vinyl.

    • 2). Dry the area of the vinyl where the rip is located with a rag if the vinyl is wet. If water continues to leak out of the mattress once dry, get a second person to help you by pinching the ripped area of the vinyl up out of the water until you repair it.

    • 3). Trim down a vinyl patch with scissors to create rounded corners on the patch. If you still have the patch provided with your waterbed mattress or air mattress, use it instead of a patch that comes in a vinyl repair kit.

    • 4). Squeeze vinyl patch adhesive onto the mattress around the rip and let it dry. Then apply a second layer of adhesive to the mattress around the rip, and cover the back of the vinyl patch with adhesive. Press the patch against the adhesive while it's still wet.

    • 5). Hold the patch on the mattress for 30 to 60 seconds. Cover the patch with adhesive and spread the adhesive with a plastic knife to make it as smooth as you can on the surface of the mattress. Let the patch dry for 30 to 60 minutes before trying to use the waterbed or air mattress.

    Swimming Pools

    • 1). Cut a piece of the vinyl patch included in an underwater vinyl patching kit that is large enough to cover the rip in the vinyl liner of the swimming pool. Make the patch big enough so that roughly 1 inch is left around all sides of the rip.

    • 2). Apply underwater vinyl adhesive around the rip with the provided applicator. You do not need to drain the pool, though you may need to wear swimming goggles to be able to see the rip clearly as you apply the patch.

    • 3). Spread more adhesive on the patch that you cut for the rip. Center the patch over the rip and press it against the pool liner. Hold the patch in place for 30 to 60 seconds.
