Concrete water-based sealers protect concrete by providing a barrier between the concrete and moisture. They also are beneficial for preventing stains. Water-based concrete sealers come in three varieties: acrylic, polyurethane and penetrating. - Water-based acrylic concrete sealers are easy to apply and can be used on interior or exterior concrete. This type of sealer is ultraviolet (UV) resistant and does not yellow over time. Water-based clear urethane-acrylic sealers can be used on unpainted concrete and previously painted concrete surfaces. It dries to a clear, high-gloss finish. Most water-based acrylic concrete sealers are hard and durable. They provide protection from weather, traffic and salts used for de-icing.
- Polyurethane concrete sealers come in water-based variety. Polyurethane is a type of thermoplastic which provides a strong seal on concrete. This type of sealer protects against chemicals and abrasives. Water-based aliphatic polyurethane sealers are used for concrete services. They are non-yellowing, odorless, abrasion-resistant and glossy. Often, polyurethanes can be used on existing, damaged or new concrete surfaces.
- Penetrating water-based sealers provide protection without yellowing or shine. These sealers also reduce stains in the concrete. Penetrating sealers do not lay on the surface, so accidents caused by slipping on the concrete are diminished. Some other features include the reduction of concrete dusting and easy removal of ice and snow. It also bonds concrete that is deteriorating. Most penetrating sealers will not change the look of the concrete.
