The Average Battery Life of an iPod Nano

    Battery Life When Fully Charged

    • The battery of your iPod Nano will play music for a maximum of 24 hours when it is fully charged. The battery is charged completely when the battery icon on your device's screen has color filling it entirely -- as the battery depletes, the color in the icon go down, starting on the right side. Recharge the battery by plugging the iPod into a wall outlet, or attaching it to your computer.

    iPod Conditions

    • The conditions in which you keep your iPod Nano can extend or reduce the amount of battery life. According to Apple, extreme temperatures are the most likely to deplete the battery prematurely. Never allow your device to be in temperatures below -4 degrees Fahrenheit or above 113 degrees. As a general rule, keep your iPod Nano out of direct sunlight and do not leave it in contained spaces that may become hot, such as your car's glove compartment.

    iPod Use

    • Because the iPod Nano uses a lithium-ion battery, it is necessary to use the device on a regular basis to ensure the maximum battery life. If an iPod goes unused for an extended period of time, the electrons will cease to move as quickly and battery life will be reduced. Always charge your iPod Nano fully and then run down the battery through use at least once each month.

    Other Considerations

    • Use the pause and hold buttons on your iPod Nano whenever you are not actively listening to music. The pause button temporarily stops a song, while the hold button prohibits the device from being accidentally turned on. Any time a song is playing without your knowledge, battery life is being compromised. Keeping your fast forwarding to a minimum and syncing compressed files to the iPod Nano will also help ensure that you get a full 24 hours of play time between charges.
