Keeping a 5 Year Old Child Healthy at Home
1. When going shopping after school with your children give them a piece of fruit to eat before going or to eat on the bus or in the car. they wont be hungry and start nagging you for sweets putting you under pressure at the supermarket and it gives them the opportunity to have one of the recommended daily allowance of 5 portions of fruit and veg a day.
2. Swap sweets for raisins, dried fruit such as apricots etc or give them a plate with mixed items at first if they only like to eat sweets and never try fruit portions.
3. Get out a party music cd or favourite tv character music cd and put it on at home, dance with your children having lots of fun to encourage them to be active in the home, plus keeping you fit at the same time.
4.Limit the tv at home so they don't become couch potatoes or playing non stop on games such as nintendo or playstations , get out twister games for all the family to join in or games where children play with the adults supervision such as hide and seek, come on mums and dad surely you played this trying to hide inside a cupboard when your parents wernt around this way you can see if you can still fit under the bed too.
5.Set up a picnic inside the house for the kids to enjoy. They take turns making the healthy food such as sandwiches, fruit, making fuit smoothies with help from mum or dad, baking healthier option snacks such as wholemeal scones etc clear a large space ie living room set it up on a large cotton sheet to catch the crumbs for all to enjoy, your children will love it, you being involved with them you will be developing good communications skills with your family. they eat healthier without noticing the change as much. They will be thrilled at having prepared the picnic and it will also be exciting for them to eat inside especially on a cold day when the weather isnt as good.
