As children grow, it is imperative that they be involved in the household chores. Not only does this help them learn responsibility as a member of the family, but it teaches them skills that they will eventually need to become more independent. Many children are busy with school and activities during the week, but parents can make a list of chores they can do once a week to help out around the house on the weekend. - A child's bedroom should be his own responsibility from a very early age. Once a week children can do a general clean-up in their rooms, including toys and dirty clothes. According to the Web MD article "Chores for Children," a child 4 years old or older can remove dirty sheets and replace them with clean ones.

The kitchen needs daily attention, but parents can assign this job to a child once a week. Children can help load and unload the dishwasher, disinfect counter tops and tables and sweep the floors. An older child can mop the floors and wash some dishes by hand. Throughout the house there are general clean-up jobs that children are capable of doing each week. Emptying trash cans and recycling throughout the house and placing it in a receptacle is an easy job for young children. According to the Family Education article "Assigning and Charting Chores," children are able to dust and vacuum common areas such as family and living rooms.

Because of the combination of water, germs and cleaners, bathroom duties should be reserved for children at least 8 years old. Children can start by learning how to clean and disinfect the sink, and then move on to the bathtub and shower. A child over 10 years old is ready to learn how to clean the toilet inside and out. - The inside of the house isn't the only place that needs attention on a weekly basis. Once a week, children can clean up the yard and make sure outdoor toys are put away. A child over 10 can mow the grass and pull weeds.
Many families spend a good deal of time in the car, so cleaning it out once a week is a must. Children as young as toddlers can clean out garbage and toys from the inside of the car, and older children can help wash the outside of the vehicle.
