A Brazilian Extravaganza in Leblon
October 14, 2010
The Plataforma barbecue restaurant in Leblon hosts one of Brazil's most popular shows among international travelers. The current production, entitled "Vai Brasil 500 Anos" (Go Brazil 500 Years) is an extravaganza which celebrates Brazil's multifaceted culture through samba, capoeira and elaborate choreography and costumes.
The show lasts nearly two hours and features many famous songs such as Aquarela do Brasil by Ary Barroso.
It ends with a Carnival parade on stage featuring the colors of the Brazilian flag.
The Plataforma restaurant, opened in the late 70s, has a vast menu with many grilled meats and sides (seven types of rice dishes, four kinds of farofa and so on). Two of the most famous entrées are the chorizo steak and "frango atropelado", created by songwriter Tom Jobim - a Plataforma regular in the 1980s. The dish, whose name is a humorous reference to road kill, consists of grilled, boneless chicken cut in half.
Jobim is remembered in the Plataforma bar, called Bar do Tom and only open on show days. The bar's show schedule is quite eclectic, covering styles as diverse as tango, Brazilian pop and The Beatles.
Drinks served at the bar include several kinds of caipirinha (for example, caipisaque and caipivodka besides traditional versions made from cachaça). There are also over 20 appetizers to choose from, such as pastéis (turnovers), Carpaccio and linguiça.
