How to Video Family Stories

    • 1). Choose the stories that you want to put on video. These may be stories that your family has passed from generation to generation or stories that your family is currently creating.

    • 2). Gather pictures, old footage or other items you can use in the editing process of creating the story. For example, if the story is about one person, you can have pictures of that person, the item the story revolved around and footage of the person to put into your video.

    • 3). Use a video camera to record several different people telling the story. This will allow you create a fuller picture with more than one perspective on the story.

    • 4). Create a reenactment of the story if it is appropriate. Some stories work well to have kids or other family members act out the events. The kids generally love to be involved this way.

    • 5). Watch the videos you have recorded and choose the clips you want to use to tell the story. Be sure you have clips that tell the entire story from beginning to end. Keep a list of these clips and write them in order before you begin editing.

    • 6). Edit the video together. You can use the narrative and play it over the slides of the pictures, old footage and the reenactment of the story.

    • 7). Add music. This music should be in the background but can help the story really come to life. You should find music the matches the mood and tone of the story.
