How to Carve Filigree Eggs

    • 1). Drill into the broad bottom of a fresh egg with a diamond bit. These sharp bits drill right through eggshells without causing cracks. Hold the egg over a small bowl and shake it gently until the white and yolk drizzle out.

    • 2). Mix about 1/4 cup of water with a drop or two of bleach, and drip the solution into the eggshell with an eyedropper. Shake the egg gently, then turn it over and let the water drizzle out. Repeat until the water runs clear.

    • 3). Allow the egg to dry for about two days. The eggshell must be dry before you start carving. Otherwise, it's very prone to cracking or shattering.

    • 4). Draw your filigree design all over the egg with a pencil. Work slowly and make very light lines, holding the shell in the palm of your hand.

    • 5). Draw over the pencil lines with a filigree carving bit, poking through the eggshell and drawing with the bit like a pencil. As long as you move the bit, it'll cut just where you want it to. These bits are very thin and sharp.
