Instructions for Closing an Above Ground Pool for Winter
- 1). Backwash your filter system if the option exists. Clean filter cartridges with a water hose. Remove the filter system's drain plug and allow the filter to drain completely. If no drain plug exists, remove the lid of the filter and suck the water out of the filter with a shop vac.
- 2). Remove any drain plugs in the pool pump. Unplug the pump from the wall outlet. Ensure all water is removed from the pump. Store the pump basket and any drain plugs in a dry location. Removing the water from the pump prevents freezing damage to the pump.
- 3). Unscrew any jets installed in the pool wall and plug the hole with a winter plug. Remove the skimmer lid and basket from the skimmer. Insert a skimmer gizmo into the skimmer hole. Plugging the skimmer hole with a gizmo prevents any freezing damage from occurring to the skimmer.
- 4). Apply the proper amount of a granule-based shock to the pool. Thoroughly dissolve the chemical before pouring it into the pool water to avoid any discoloration or bleaching to pool surfaces. Shocking the pool before closing it ensures no contaminants such as algae grow in the water over the winter months.
- 5). Remove any ladders or steps installed in your above-ground pool. Set any air pillows or other cover flotation devices into the pool water. Set the pool cover into place over the pool. Once the cover is in place, ensure it is tied down tightly.
