Children"s Book Week

November 13-19 is Children's Book Week. This annual even is sponsored by the Children's Book Council to encourage children to read and enjoy reading. Many gifted children need no such encouragement as they are already avid readers. Some of them, however, do not seem terribly interested in reading, at least not the kind of reading most children their age enjoy. For example, quite a few gifted children are not interested in fiction; they prefer non-fiction.

If your child doesn't seem to enjoy reading, try providing some non-fiction reading on topics they enjoy. Even an interest in Pokemon can provide reading material! Visiting the library with your child and exploring the many books there can often help you discover your child's interests. Regardless of whether your child is an avid reader or a reluctant one, knowing what to consider before you buy a book for your child takes much of the guesswork out of choosing books and can help you select those books your child is likely to enjoy.
