How to Prime an Inground Pool Pump

- 1). Turn off the inground pool pump and unscrew its clear plastic lid. Pull the lid off the pump and place a garden hose into the portion of the pump holding the strainer basket.
- 2). Turn on the garden hose and fill the interior of the inground pump with water. Run the hose until water backs up inside the pump and overflows out of the top. Filling the pump with water helps fill the entire plumbing system with water, which prevents air locks from occurring in the system.
- 3). Screw the lid onto the inground pool pump by hand. Turn on the pump and run it until water is clearly visible circulating inside the pump. If the pump becomes air locked -- that is, water ceases flowing through the pump -- repeat the water filling process until no air remains inside the pump and water continuously circulates while the pump is in use.
