A lot of people are afraid to trim their puppies/dogs nails - fearful that they will cut them too short and they will bleed.
But, if two people work together (one holding the puppy and the other using the nail clippers) nail trimming is fairly simple.
Most puppies have small enough feet/nails that common fingernail clippers work just fine.
Getting Started - Take a moment to examine your puppy's nails.
You should be able to see three parts as follows: A white tip, A clear (see through) base, and the pink "quick" which is visible through the base of the nail.
It's the blood vessel and nerve that supply the toenail that is called the "quick" that you want to pay attention too while clipping the nail.
Start trimming by clipping very small sections at a time, and trim the "white" tip of the nail - take your time - while you and your partner talk gently to him to keep him calm.
Once you get close to the quick you are finished.
Bleeding If you accidentally clip too close and the quick begins to bleed, don't panic - your puppy won't bleed to death or be permanently harmed.
Have some baking powder or cornstarch handy and dip the bleeding nail into a small amount of it on your fingertip.
Or you can purchase a product at the pet supply store called "Quick Stop" and do the same thing.
This will stop the bleeding and then you can continue trimming the other nails.
