What To Do If Your Dog Gets Skunked
I was fast asleep in my bed at 1 am when my Miniature Pinscher Chee Chee jumped in my bed along with the most horrible stench you could imagine.
You see, my husband had let her out to go to the bathroom.
She had spotted a skunk and quickly gave chase, much to her dismay the skunk lit up and gave her a shocking spray right to the face.
She was so scared she ran as fast as she could into the house to the first safe place she could find, my bed.
We immediately grabbed her and took her to the bathroom.
The whole house already smelling like skunk.
The first thought that came to mind was tomato juice.
We proceeded to bath her in it to no avail, the stench remained.
So I went online to see what we had at home that would work.
I read that a combination of 1 quart of white vinegar or 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, and 1 teaspoon dishdetergent would work.
I had all of the ingredients so I tried it.
Look out the baking soda and vinegar will foam quickly (to my surprise).
We bathed her in this concoction which helped but did not completely remove the odor.
Not enough to live with her.
So read on i did, until I came across another remedy.
Simple Green!! Simple Green is nontoxic, biodegradable, and environmentally safe and it worked like a charm.
I sprayed Chee Chee careful to avoid her eyes and nose and rubbed it in, then gave a quick bath with dog shampoo.
Although the faint smell hung around she was able to stay in the house with us for the rest of the night.
The next morning I wanted to completely get rid of the smell so I talk with a friend of mine who suggested orange cleaner.
Also nontoxic.
You see this is what she used on her dog who always brought dead skunk home and didn't seem to mind the smell.
I didn't have any orange cleaner but i did have orange sweet tincture that i got from the local herbalist which by the way is excellent for getting oil stains out of clothing.
I put some of this on Chee Chee, then rinsed her.
Joy and jubilation, my dog smells like an orange not a skunk! I also noticed Chee Chee was scratching at her eyes and i have heard of dogs going blind after a direct hit to the eyes.
But I also understand it is cause by the animal scratching the cornea after a spray.
I rinsed her eyes with a couple drops of Visine and she stopped scratching.
I washed our bedding with several drops of sweet orange tincture, the result being no skunk smell in my bed.
I do suggest any dog owner with a risk of skunks keep a bottle of Natures Miracle Skunk odor remover (www.
ourpetsuppliesweb.
com) for just such emergencies.
But if you find yourself without it you can use my experience to help yourself and your dog.
