Manaus is the largest port in the state of Amazonas, and a center for commerce and tourism. [p] Visitors arrive and leave by river boat to cruise down the Rio Negro, named for its dark waters, to join the Amazon either on their way upriver ultimately to Peru or downriver past many ports to Belem.
