How to Look After Nose Piercings

    • 1). Ensure that your piercer is experienced and has a good reputation. Check through his portfolio online or at the shop for new and healed piercings. When you visit the shop, be sure that it is clean and that all instruments and jewelery are sanitized properly.

    • 2). Avoid all temptation to touch the piercing after it has been done. Playing with the ring or stud will introduce bacteria and can cause an infection. Do not apply makeup to the piercing or the area around it.

    • 3). Clean your piercing twice a day, using a sea salt soak. First, wash your hands. Add 1 tbsp. of sea salt -- not table salt -- to a cup of hot water. Allow the water to cool until it is warm to the touch and not too hot. Either submerge your nose piercing in the cup or wet a cotton ball or swab with the solution and apply it to the piercing. Carefully soften and wipe away any hardened crust from the piercing and jewelry. Do the same to the inside of your nose with a clean cotton ball or swab.

    • 4). Avoid using rubbing alcohol to clean piercings, as it can dry and irritate the pierced site, according to Body Manipulations. Stick to the sea salt solution or antimicrobial soap, and your piercing should heal quickly and painlessly.

    • 5). Do not remove the jewelry from your nose piercing until the piercer says it's okay. If you need to change it for any reason, contact your piercer and ask her to do it for you.
