What Do You Need to Develop Apps for the iPod?
- Decide what kind of account you need. Two free accounts are available: the University Program or the individual free account. You won't be able to distribute your app with a free account, but you can download and experiment with Xcode, the app development software. To distribute through the App Store, sign up for the iOS Developer Program. You'll be charged a yearly fee for either an individual or company account. There's also an Enterprise Program for companies who want to develop apps for internal company use only. This program also costs a yearly fee.
- Download Xcode after you sign up for a developer account. This is a full software suite that allows you to design, code and test your app. It can be used for iPod touch, iPhone and iPad applications. The Apple Dev Center Resources website has lots of tutorial videos and articles that show you how to use each Xcode module. If you're registered as a free member, use the Xcode to learn and experiment. If you're building an app for distribution, begin thinking about your design.
- Plan your app and hire designers or programmers if you're developing your app for distribution. The app market is crowded. Put an original spin on an existing app idea, or develop an idea that's truly unique. In either case, take the time to create a well-designed, useful app. Don't forget to test. With the Xcode debugger you can test your app in real time over your home or office Wi-Fi connection. Perform several tests to make sure your app won't crash before you submit it for approval.
- Log in to your developer account and click on "App Store Resource Center" to submit your app for approval in the App Store. The App Store Resource Center has the most current app submission guidelines, so review them before you submit to save time in the process. You'll be able to access this section only if you have a paid developer account. Once your app is approved it'll be available in the App Store.
