Outdoor Jacuzzis, spas, whirlpools and hot tubs all have one feature in common: All need a snugly-fitting cover to insulate them and keep your spa not only clean, but also as warm as possible with very little use of energy. Spa covers can last for years when cared for properly, but many require replacement at some point during the life of the spa. - Hot tub covers are known to crack and peel, especially if the cover is exposed to a good dose of daily direct sun. Cracking and peeling is more a problem found in arid climates than areas with some humidity in the air. The same goes for covers that are consistently exposed to extreme cold or are covered with snow or ice for long periods. Once the fabric layer that encases the cover is compromised, the insulating layer becomes saturated from rain or snow, making the cover extremely heavy and dysfunctional.
- Hot tub covers often fall prey to folks that use them as if they were outdoor seating. Most can handle some weight, but they were not meant for this use. Hot tub covers for larger tubs that are hinged in the center are especially susceptible to damage from people sitting or standing on them on a regular basis. Weight tends to dent the insulating foam layer intended to keep your hot tub warm. If enough weight is applied, it can actually fracture the insulation layer and not fit properly or flush on your tub.
- Hot tubs covers are manufactured to provide a snug fit that allows the cover to insulate the tub. Fabric overhangs should slide easily over the exterior edge of the tub to seal the cover tightly to the lip of the tub. If the overhanging fringe is damaged or the fridge has torn from wear, your cover won't seal in the tub's heat efficiently.
