How to Get a Child to Take Adderall

    • 1). Be honest with your child about why he or she needs to take Adderall, and at the same time, convey that it is a medicine he needs to take to make things better. Children mimic their parents when it comes to reactions, so if you act nonchalant, so will your child. Explain that Adderall is a drug that he will start taking, similar to a vitamin, every day.

    • 2). Give the Adderall to your child at the same time each day. Adderall usually needs to be taken twice a day, but check your prescription to see how many pills to take, how often and when. Set your alarm clock for the same time each morning to give your child the pill. If he is taking an afternoon dosage as well, set your alarm clock again. Even if you will remember, set the alarm. This helps form the habit. Eventually, your child should do this on his own.

    • 3). Encourage your child to take the Adderall, and let him know that you are proud of his consistency and remembering to take the pill(s) at the same time each day. Depending on his age, different rewards may be called for. You can take him to see a movie, to the zoo and let him know you are aware of him being responsible by taking the medication. Letting him know that will also cause you to be more aware of his medication habits, so you can watch for warning signs of misuse.
