How to Plant Sunflower Seedlings

    • 1). Purchase sunflower seedlings at a garden center or nursery, or grow your own seedlings from sunflower seeds. Plant the seedlings in the garden after you're sure freezing nights are past.

    • 2). Choose a good spot to plant the sunflower seedlings. Sunflowers need sunlight all day, and they should be planted in soil that drains well. Be sure not to plant the sunflowers where they will shade other sun-loving plants.

    • 3). Dig a small hole for each seedling. The hole should be slightly larger than the seedling's root system. Remove each seedling from its container and plant it in the hole. Tamp the soil down around the seedling. Plant small sunflower varieties 12 inches apart. If you're planting giant sunflowers, leave at least 18 inches between each seedling.

    • 4). Water the sunflower seedlings immediately after planting, and then water them deeply twice a week for the first month. After that time, water the plants when the soil is dry to the touch, but be careful not to over-water. Too much water can soften the soil, and the weight of the sunflowers can pull the plants out of the ground.
