The Benefits of Open Source Software
Open source software is software released under license which allows people who use it to access and change the code in order to make enhancements to and personalisations to it.
There are many great reasons why this is better than traditional closed software, namely: • The applications can be modified to work on a more personalised level • Allowing many developers to work on the software can push it forward much more quickly • Open source software is typically free to download There are down sides to open source software however and the most notorious is malicious code and viruses being released into the code, attacking any user unlucky enough to download it at the wrong time.
Thankfully this is relatively rare, with most open source software being progressive and innovative, and clean! Many experts believe open source programs to be very much the future, with closed software which is packaged and sold being consigned to the history books.
This fits well with the cloud computer revolution which is currently happening; the shared versus owned culture we are heading toward.
So will we all eventually download our open source software and work directly from the cloud? Only time will tell.
The internet is becoming more and more sophisticated with each year that passes, with new technologies and methodologies arriving and a consciousness to do better.
Companies and individuals are putting a real emphasis on web standards and creating truly user-friendly experiences in fluid web apps.
For this reason, web applications are quickly becoming almost indistinguishable from desktop applications.
This signals a powerful movement which is well in line with cloud computing; that is storing everything you do remotely instead of locally, and accessing it via the internet.
Instead of just adding and retrieving our files from the cloud, we will also be using it to store programs that we currently install on our machines.
The future is not CD or DVD, it is open source web applications which can be altered to personalize a user's experience.
We're not quite there yet however, with many people still running low speed web connections and the web technology for actually building this stuff still in its infancy.
Only when we start seeing millions of truly great, standards-aware websites which genuinely do work for everybody can we seriously look at ditching installed applications for pure web apps.
Experts believe this time won't come for another generation.
