How to Install a Crawl-Space Vapor Barrier
- 1). Call the local building department and ask them if you can install vapor barrier in your crawlspace. The local building department will be able to let you know if your house is an area that will benefit from installing a vapor barrier or if it will not benefit at all.
- 2). Lay out the vapor barrier starting from the wall of the crawlspace in the far corner of the crawlspace entrance. Secure the vapor barrier in the corner of the crawlspace with the staple gun.
- 3). Stretch out the vapor barrier and place a staple every 12 inches on the wall. Cut the excess vapor barrier with the utility knife.
- 4). Lay the next vapor barrier so it overlaps by six inches over the previous barrier. Continue laying until you covered the entire floor and walls of the crawlspace. Secure the vapor barriers to each other by applying moisture barrier tape. Do not worry too much about any small holes that are formed on the vapor barrier as you install it. Place a piece of moisture barrier tape to cover any holes made during the installation process.
- 5). Cover the staples with a layer of moisture barrier tape. With the staples covered, you will have an air tight crawlspace.
