Home & Garden Swimming Pools & Water Fountains & Ponds

Directions for Opening an Inground Pool

    • 1). Remove leaves and debris from the pool cover using a skimmer net. Pump off any standing water on top of the cover. This standing water will be dirty, so try to get as little of it in the pool as possible.

    • 2). Remove the cover. Clean the cover as best you can. Dry and store the cover.

    • 3). Inspect the filter and pumps. Empty any water tubes you may have and unplug all piping in both the pool and filter system. Change or clean the filter if needed at this time.

    • 4). Reattach stored equipment such as ladders, diving boards, baskets, plugs and gauges. Reground all wires as necessary for metal parts. Lubricate bolts to make closing the pool later in the year easier.

    • 5). Hook up the pump and filter along with any other equipment you may have and test the system. Turn it on and inspect for any issues such as leaking. All wiring should be grounded. The pumps should prime properly.

    • 6). Vacuum any debris at the bottom of the pool. Scrub the sides of the pool. Use a skimmer net to get any floating debris that results from the cleaning.

    • 7). Shock the pool with chlorine. The treatment should raise the chlorine level to 3.0 ppm. Test the water with a testing kit until you reach this level.

    • 8). Filter continuously for a few days. Continue to clean any algae out of the pool. Monitor chemical levels. Backwash as needed. Clean any debris off the bottom of the pool with a vacuum.

    • 9). Monitor all chemical levels. Once the pool is clear make sure the level of chlorine is below 2.0 ppm, then lower it to 1.0 ppm. The pH level should be between 7.2 and 7.6. Add clarifier and continue filtering for at least another 24 hours.
