Products and Styling Tips for Curly Hair
Being blessed with curly hair isn't always a blessing. Curly hair can be unruly, become frizzy, and it can be hard to get it to do what you want it to do. Luckily for all of you with curly hair, there are many curly hair products available to help you get your hair to do what you want it to do. Being educated about what are in the products you use will help you have the curls you want.
Most shampoos have an ingredient in them that is both a detergent and a salt. This ingredient is sodium lauryl sulfate and is very good at cleaning hair. But, when it comes to curly hair, this ingredient is too hard on it and can leave it dry, frizzy, and out of control. A shampoo that uses oils and some water, instead of sodium lauryl sulfate, will help your curls be shinier and curlier.
Curly hair makes it more difficult for the natural oils that come from the scalp to make it down to the ends of the hair. As a result, the lower part of the hair strands tend to be dry and frizzy. There are products for curly hair that you apply in the shower and then follow up with a leave-in conditioner that does a great job at hydrating dry, frizzy, and curly hair. The right product doesn't coat the hair and make it heavy like some of the other products can.
Sprays can be used to style curly hair, but make sure you look for sprays for soft curls. When you want bigger curls, you will need to look for a thicker gel. If it is tiny coils you want, you will have to find a dense cream. Alcohol is another ingredient in hair products that can be very harmful to curly hair. Products you can find alcohol in can be mousses, gels, and hair sprays. If you don't want crunchy curls, you will need to stay away from products with alcohol in them.
Instead of using your towel to scrunch your hair to help the curls be curly, and to keep your curls from feeling sticky and stiff, try putting the products on your hair before you leave the shower. You may be tempted to use your towel at this point, but don't. Use your fingers like a comb and work the products you put into your hair by moving the product from the roots of your hair to the ends. Once you have done this, it is time to scrunch your hair, but with your hands, not your towel. As you squeeze, lift your hair toward your scalp. When you do use a towel on your wet hair, press the towel to your head and don't rub it around so the cuticle on the hair strands doesn't open up. Microfiber towels tend to be easier on curly hair than the cotton ones.
When you blow dry curly hair, make sure you use your blow dryer with a diffuser on it so you can give your curls the individual attention they need. Other styling tools that use heat to style hair can eventually take the curl out of the curl. If you find your curls uncurling, adding moisture to them may get the curl back.
Your curly hair will need curly hair productsfor some touch ups when a curl gets squirrelly and out of place, or a bit of frizziness starts to happen. Look for a product that can rehydrate and refresh your beautiful curls quickly. There are products and tools available beyond the ones mentioned here that are made to make curls more curly, defined, and healthy.
