Boxing Mitt Training

    Definition

    • Boxing mitts, also called focus mitts, are padded gloves that are used in training programs. The instructor or trainer holds the mitts in front of the fighter while calling out instructions. Boxing mitts can be used outside of sparring to work on specific areas of a fighter’s game such as defense or combination punching. It’s important for the instructor to hold the mitts properly as being too rigid can lead to injury when they are struck.

    Combination training

    • Combination punching is an important part of any boxer’s repertoire. A fighter needs to be able to throw punches in succession to keep his opponent off guard and in a dangerous position. Training with boxing mitts can help develop a fighter's ability to use combinations. For example, the trainer can spend time showing a fighter a particular combination such as the jab, jab, hook combo. Next, the fighter would practice that combination as his trainer held up the mitts; calling for the punches in order. With repeated practice, the fighter will be able to use these combos one after another.

    Defense Training

    • Defense is just as important to offense when trying to win a boxing match. A fighter must be able to avoid and block his opponent’s attacks. Training with boxing mitts can help develop these abilities. The trainer wearing the mitts can mimic a punching motion, forcing the boxer to either block or dodge the punch. Defense training with mitts can also be added into other training programs. For example, a trainer can instruct the boxer to throw a combination series and then dodge or block the oncoming attack from the mitts. This training will help the fighter learn the movements associated with punching and how to deal with oncoming blows.

    Technique Training

    • In boxing, technique plays a vital part in success. Throwing an effective strike is not just about power, but the technique of delivery as well. When using boxing mitts, a fighter can work on his technique when throwing punches. The instructor can demonstrate the proper way to throw a punch such as an uppercut. Then instruct the fighter on how to mimic those movements in the best form possible. The development of punching techniques can help a fighter land a powerful blow at the right moment.

    Other Information

    • Punching mitts are used for a number of combat sports such as kickboxing and muay thai boxing. Kicking pads are another form of boxing pad, but their function is to support the development of kicking abilities. Boxing mitts can be purchased from sports stores such as the Sports Authority or online vendors such as MMAwarehouse.com.
