Fly-in Moose Hunting in Ontario, Canada

    Time Frame

    • The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources sets the moose seasons between September and December. Season dates may vary, based on the weapon or conservation goals for the unit. Most units will have a gun season opening on Sept. 18 or Oct. 9 and closing by Dec. 15. This time of year in the remote fly-in areas of Ontario can provide unpredictable extreme weather. Be prepared for extreme weather changes with waterproof and insulated clothing.

    Regulations

    • If you are a non-resident, you must hire a licensed outfitter to hunt moose in Ontario. The outfitter will assist you in arranging the fly-in details for arrival and departure into the hunting area. Non-residents must carry the moose validation tag affixed to the moose hunting license. Residents are allowed to carry the validation tag affixed to the game seal. After harvesting a moose, you must immediately attach the validation tag to the moose.

    Geography

    • Remote areas of Ontario are and accessible only with a fly-in trip. These areas can contain healthy populations of moose. There are areas of the boreal forests that consist of 60,000 roadless square miles. The geography of these fly-in areas provide ideal moose habitat, consisting of large open meadows, marsh and dense forests.

    Methods

    • Traditional moose hunting methods involve using cow calls to lure in a bull. According to Ontario Moose Hunting Lodges, calling Ontario moose isn't the most effective method, it recommends using canoe paddles to rake brush simulating another bull walking through the woods. Other methods can include stalking through the brush or waiting along feeding areas or marsh meadows.

    Considerations

    • Fly-in hunts take you deep into the wilderness away from civilization. Prepare for the worst situation and consider every possible scenario by packing extra clothing and a first aid kit. Pack a satellite phone to communicate with the fly-in pilot or other emergencies.

    Benefits

    • The biggest advantage to a fly-in moose hunt in Ontario is the ability to escape the crowds of hunters. When you fly in, you are in the deep wilderness where large concentrations of moose can be found and hunted. Some moose in these remote areas may have never seen a human in their life.
