How to Open a New Jersey Business

    • 1). Register your new business with the State of New Jersey by filling out a new business registration form. Call the New Jersey Department of the Treasury to request a registration packet in the mail or access the online application at the agency's website. Complete the application, and submit it along with the filing fee of $125 as of 2010.

    • 2). If your business will be a C corporation, an S corporation or a limited liability corporation, also file formation documents with the state office of public records. Then pay the additional filing fee of $125 as of 2010.

    • 3). Register with the New Jersey State Unemployment Insurance agency and with the State Disability Insurance fund.

    • 4). Obtain a local business license from the clerk of the county where the business is located.

    • 5). Obtain any necessary additional certification from the agencies regulating the specific field in which you will be operating. Business activities that require special state certification include cosmetology, electrical contracting, home repair contracting, marriage and family therapy, optometry, pharmacology and refrigeration engineering. Each field has its own certification process, application and fees and examinations. As of 2010, fees for most fields are under $200 for licensing and exams.

    • 6). Register your New Jersey business with any federal agencies that will also have jurisdiction over your business activities. If you will be hiring employees, register with the IRS as an employer, and obtain an employer identification number. Also register with any federal agencies that will regulate the transactions you make across state lines, such as the USDA for food processing or the Interstate Commerce Commission if your will be transporting product across state lines.
