How to Free Otters From Traps

    • 1). Examine the situation to see where the trap caught the otter. Try to find out if the otter is injured. If the otter is hurt, contact a fish and game officer to assist in seeking medical attention for the otter. If the otter is uninjured, you can proceed with releasing the otter from the trap.

    • 2). Approach the trap slowly and carefully so you don't startle the otter. Stay away from the otter's teeth and paws. Release the otter by raising the opening of the trap if it is a square metal trap. Open the trap and release the otter's foot if it is a foot trap.

    • 3). Walk away from the otter and allow it to make its own way out of the trap area. Do not attempt to pick up the otter or the trap, as that may startle and scare the otter.
