TaylorMade Golf R9 Super Tri Driver Review

Released last year, the TaylorMade R9 SuperTri Driver is the first driver to unify all of TaylorMade's major driver technologies in a maximum-sized, 460cc clubhead: Movable Weight Technology, Flight Control Technology, Inverted Cone Technology and Ultra-Thin Wall Technology. But what features does it have? Will they suit you or perform better than your previous drivers? Read on and find your answer.

Look and Feel
Sleek all-black looks made this a very good looking club. The black PVD face was first seen from TaylorMade with the highly regarded R7 SuperQuad. The head shape is not quite the classic pear shape with its fractionally extended rear but it's a million miles from the lairy max-MOI efforts that are now so commonplace. Because the face is so deep it has a very reassuring look at address

Design
The adjustable hosel allows you to select one of eight different loft, lie and face-angle configurations so you can pick the look at address that best suits your swing. Moveable Weight Technology (MWT) is seen in these three weight ports which are interchangeable so you can adjust the center of gravity to promote a fade, neutral or draw bias. The sleek head design of the SuperTri reduces wind drag in the downswing to increase swing speeds which translates into more distance.

Inside the clubhead, Ultra-thin Wall technology reduces the wall thickness of the clubhead, relieving enough discretionary weight to allow for the implementation of both FCT and MWT in a 460cc clubhead. Finally, like in other TaylorMade drivers, the R9 SuperTri Driver features Inverted Cone Technology for a hotter clubface to increase energy transfer to the ball at impact.

Performance
I’ve seen amazing results with the FCT feature on the R9 Super Tri, you can have up to 75 yards of flight trajectory options. I have my settings to NU which is neutral upright and it produces a slight draw. I changed it just to just test the differences between all the settings and I can say there is a pretty big difference in trajectory and distances. This driver really does give you maximum control over your ball flight because of the FCT and customization options.

The shaft I’d say is pretty good, maybe not the greatest, but I’d say its definitely good enough to do the job of a tour driver. The feel of the driver is great. the ball just seems to jump off the clubhead. The inverted cone technology works well for people who don’t hit the sweet spot all the time. Everyone has an occasional mis-hit so having the luxury of not needing to hit the sweetspot every time is nice. When I do miss it I don’t lose nearly as much distance as I used to with older drivers plus the ball still goes straight so I don’t mind if I’m hitting out of the fairway.

Conclusion
The customization features (FCT & MWT) on the R9 Supertri Driver [http://www.golfshopshopping.com/goods-484-TaylorMade+R9+Super+Tri+Driver+.html] are even better than on the previous R9?s. There is a noticeable difference for sure. So for me it doesn’t matter what swing I bring to the course each time, I can just hit a dozen balls on the range before I tee off, make my adjustments and I’m guaranteed to hit at least 75% of fairways. I can’t stress enough how much better my accuracy and consistency is with the new R9 supertri. I highly recommend it for anyone struggling with their driver.
