The Denver Nuggets Are Better Off Without Carmelo Anthony
Nobody knew it at the time but the Denver Nuggets are just doing just fine since trading Carmelo Anthony.
They are doing more than fine.
They are thriving.
They are 9-2.
In fact for the first time in team history they have won three consecutive road games by more than ten points.
It makes me think what kind record would they have had if they would did this trade before the season started.
They would have had a full training camp together and a full season together.
Not to mention not having to deal with constant dark cloud of the Carmelo thing hanging over their heads every single night.
The trade was made two thirds in.
This team was put together on the fly and they are getting it done.
The reasons are obvious as the snow capped mountains around Denver.
They have so much more depth.
Wilson Chandler and Raymond Felton have been strong contributors offensively and defensively.
Chandler is a good scorer and plays tough defense.
Felton has scored and he has been getting the ball to the other players in their best scoring positions.
It's not a secret that Carmelo never put much effort on the defensive end.
Everybody plays defense now or they don't play at all.
Having more depth allows the starters to play hard because they know as soon as they get tired.
They will be replaced and there is really no drop off in talent with the reserves.
The Nuggets have been pushing the ball up the court and wearing teams down, even on the road.
Plus the players know that if they are playing poorly or not playing defense, they will be yanked by George Karl in a second.
Remember all this is getting done without Danilo Gallinari who was a key component in the trade.
He has been out with a toe injury and is due back soon.
Gallinari will have to play well just to earn minutes.
The Nuggets play a team concept.
What a novelty, but one of the drawbacks of having a superstar is there is a tendency to stand around and watch him play one on one basketball.
That is a nice option to have, because Carmelo is one the best one on players in the league.
But it led to a lot of standing around and watching by the other players on the court.
Without Carmelo the Nuggets have no choice but to move the ball and to share the ball, which is what they have been doing.
They have seven guys averaging in double figures.
Defenses just can't zero in on stopping just one man.
On any given night any of those players can go off and get 25.
The Nuggets will be a team to watch come playoff time.
It's more the likely that the Nuggets will be playing the talented and young Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round.
This will be the marquis match up of all first round match ups.
The Thunder will be slightly favored, but if they don't give the Nuggets their full attention and play at their top level, they could easily get sent home packing early.
