How to Build an Elevated Hunting Stand
- 1). Measure and cut your lumber. Cut treated 2-x-4s into four, 2-foot pieces, which will be used as ladder rungs. Set aside two 10-foot boards for the sides of the ladder. Cut six 3-foot treated 2-x-4s. Four will construct the 3-foot by 3-foot platform frame, while two will serve as floor joists. For ladder braces, cut two 3-foot 1-x-6 treated fence boards. To build the platform, you will need six more 1-x-6 3-foot boards for sheathing. Set aside or cut two 6-foot 2-x-4s to brace the bottom of platform to the tree or post.
- 2). Construct the stand's ladder. Fasten ladder rungs to the two 10-foot side boards, screwing them flush every 2 feet beginning at the bottom of the ladder. At least 3-inch wood screws are recommended.
- 3). Construct the platform. Form a square with four 3-foot treated 2-x-4s. Screw the frame together from the outer corners. Screw joist boards inside the box, placing them 1.5 feet from the sides. Sheathe the frame with the pre-cut three-foot 1-x-6s.
- 4). Fasten the ladder to top of the platform on the right or left side, depending on your preference. Make sure corner brackets are secure. Fasten a 1-x-6 brace to each side of the ladder and each side of the frame using corner brackets.
- 5). Raise and attach the stand to the tree (or wooden post). With help and a sturdy ladder, raise the platform and ladder ten feet onto the tree trunk. Fasten the back of the deck to the tree with with 6-inch hex bolts. Space bolts 1.5 to 2 inches apart. Fasten a 10-foot 2-x-4 to each front corner of deck. Make sure they reach the ground and stand firmly. Angle a 1-x-6 fence board from the deck to each side of tree near the back of the platform. Your elevated hunting stand should stand 10 feet above the ground.
